“Richard Attenborough: a life both sides the camera” sale announced at Bonhams

Bonhams annuncia la Richard Attenborough: a life both sides of the camera un’asta dedicata a Lord Attenborough ed alle sue collezioni provenienti dalle sue case di Londra e dell’isola di Bute, a sud ovest della Scozia. Avrà luogo nella sede Bonhams di Knightsbridge a Londra il 21 ottobre.

Lord Attenborough (1923-2014) fu una dei personaggi pubblici più amati della Gran Bretagna la cui carriera nel cinema come attore e regista ha attraversato 65 anni. L’evento rifletterà non solo l’ampiezza della sua vita creativa, ma anche il suo profondo interesse per la storia dell’industria cinematografica.

Lord e Lady Attenborough erano avidi collezionisti di dipinti inglesi del XX secolo e l’asta offre molte opere provenienti dalle loro case a Londra e in Scozia. Tra questi, un dipinto ad olio di Alan Lowndes (£ 10,000-15,000), un ritratto di Lord e Lady Attenborough di John Bratby (£ 4.000-6.000) e una caricatura di Oscar Wilde di Max Beerbohm (£ 5.000-7.000).

L’asta comprenderà anche mobili e altri effetti personali, tra cui la scrivania di Lord Attenborough proveniente da Beaver Lodge, il suo ufficio adiacente alla casa di famiglia a Richmond.

Queste le parole del figlio di Lord e Lady Attenborough, il celebre regista teatrale Michael Attenborough, “I miei genitori avevano un gusto impeccabile, non hanno mai comprato nulla come investimento, ma semplicemente perché amavano l’arte; era loro ferma convinzione che vivere immersi in un ambiente ricco d’arte arricchisce il proprio rapporto con il mondo”.

La Rolls Royce Corniche di Lord Attenborough, con la sua targa personale RA III, sarà venduta invece separatamente presso la Bonhams Beaulieu sale of Collectors Motor Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia che si svolgerà presso il Museo Nazionale di Beaulieu Motor a sud di Southampton, il 5 settembre prossimo.

Richard Attenborough

Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) è stato un attore inglese, regista e produttore. Si ricordano le performance in film come La grande fuga (1963) o Jurassic Park (1993). Come regista, ha vinto due Oscar per Gandhi nel 1983;  durante la sua carriera è stato il destinatario di quattro BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) e quattro Golden Globe. Altri film di rilievo come regista sono, Chaplin (1992) e Viaggio in Inghilterra (1993). Ha servito come presidente della Royal Academy of Dramatic Art e della British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Richard Attenborough è stato fatto CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) nel 1967, e nominato cavaliere nel 1976.


Bonhams today announces that Richard Attenborough: a life both sides of the camera – a sale of Lord Attenborough’s memorabilia and selected contents from his houses in London and on the Isle of Bute –  will be held at Bonhams Knightsbridge, London on 21st October.

Lord Attenborough (1923-2014) was one of Britain’s best loved public figures whose career in the film industry as actor and director spanned 65 years. The sale will reflect not only the breadth of his own creative life, but also his deep interest in the history of the industry.

Highlights among a wealth of material include:

•A rare 1918 Charlie Chaplin film poster for A Dog’s Life (£10,000-15,000)

•The prop cane used by Richard Attenborough in Jurassic Park 1993 (£3,000-5,000)

•A set of early black and white stills from Brighton Rock 1947 (£1,000-1,500)

•The working screen play for the multi Oscar winning film Gandhi (£2,000-3,000).

Lord and Lady Attenborough were avid collectors of British 20th century paintings and the sale features many works which hung in their homes in London and Scotland. These include a fine oil painting by Alan Lowndes (£10,000-15,000), a portrait of Lord and Lady Attenborough by John Bratby (£4,000-6,000) and a caricature of Oscar Wilde by Max Beerbohm (£5,000-7,000).

The sale will also include furniture and other personal effects including Lord Attenborough’s desk from Beaver Lodge, his office next door to the family house in Richmond.

In the words of Lord and Lady Attenborough’s son, the celebrated theatre director Michael Attenborough, “My parents had impeccable taste, they never bought anything as an investment, but simply because they loved it; and they lived by the firm conviction that beautiful surroundings had the power to humanise, to enrich one’s relationship with the world.”

Lord Attenborough’s prized Rolls Royce Corniche with its distinctive number plate, RA III will be sold separately at Bonhams Beaulieu sale of Collectors Motor Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum on 5 September.  It is estimated at £12,000-15,000.

Richard Attenborough (1923–2014) was an English actor, film director and producer. His most memorable performances include Pinkie in Brighton Rock (1947), Squadron Leader Bartlett, ‘Big X’ in The Great Escape (1963), John Christie in 10 Rillington Place (1971) and John Hammond in Jurassic Park (1993).  As a director, he won two Academy Awards for the 1983 epic Gandhi and during his career was the recipient of four BAFTAs and Four Golden Globe Awards.  Among his other notable films as director were (1972), A Bridge Too Far (1977) Chaplin (1992) and Shadowlands (1993).  He served as President of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Richard Attenborough was made CBE in 1967, knighted in 1976 and raised to the Peerage as Baron Attenborough of Richmond upon Thames in 1993.
